Mountain Whitewater Celebrates Earth Day!

Offsets are a great way to do your part on Earth Day.

In order to celebrate this wonderful planet and our company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, Mountain Whitewater is participating in the Colorado Carbon Fund’s Earth Week Campaign. The campaign asks individuals and businesses to voluntarily offset their emissions for the week of Earth Day (April 18-24). Mountain Whitewater has contributed to offset 5 metric tons of its carbon emissions, Enough to cover the output from our buses for an entire summer!

Please join us in our sustainability efforts by offsetting your own carbon emissions! It is easy to contribute; all you need to do is contact the Colorado Carbon Fund (CCF) at (303) 866-2264 or email them at ccf@state.co.us. For every dollar received by CCF, a dollar will be spent on building clean energy projects in Colorado. This will create jobs, reduce emissions, and bring Colorado’s clean energy future that much closer to reality.

Mountain Whitewater has also been participating in the City of Fort Collins’ Climate Wise program since 2009, and has achieved the title of Gold Level business for 2011 through our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Mountain Whitewater also encourages all of our guests to offset their travel emissions though a local non-profit company called Trees, Water & People. The program is very simple. Find where you live (or where you traveled from) on our Carbon Offset Travel Map. The map will show you the cost to offset the full Carbon impact of your travel with Trees, Water & People (The map prices are based off of national averages for vehicle mileage). Mountain Whitewater can simply add this price of your CO2 offset to the price of your trip or feel free to just leave a donation with our office staff when you check-in. If you do not wish to offset all of your Carbon Footprint from your travels, no problem, any offset donations will be accepted. In fact, Mountain Whitewater believes in sustainable travel so much, that we will match all of our guest offset contributions up to $1000 each season.

Water Saving Tips

There are a number of ways to save water, and they all start with you.

Water Splash on the Cache la Poudre River

Our Water is One of our Most Precious Resources

1. Stop buying bottled water!

2. When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

3. Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.

4. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

5. Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.

6. Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.

7. For cold drinks keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.

8. Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.

9. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.

10. Spreading a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water, time and money.

11. If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model.

12. Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.

13. When buying new appliances, consider those that offer cycle and load size adjustments. They’re more water and energy efficient.

14. Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month.

15. Adjust your lawn mower to a higher setting. A taller lawn shades roots and holds soil moisture better than if it is closely clipped.

16. If the toilet flush handle frequently sticks in the flush position, letting water run constantly, replace or adjust it.

Mountain Whitewater is giving Their Soles to Countries in Need

MWD starts a new partnership with One World Running.

For Mountain Whitewater, sustainability and environmental stewardship is at the core of the business. Day after day we find shoes left in our parking lot, which makes us feel the need to do something about this problem. “Throughout the season, many lightly used sneakers are left without a home. It is good to know that by working with One World Running we now have an outlet to get these shoes to people who need them. And, who knows, by donating these shoes we may be opening new opportunities and encouraging a shared love of working in the outdoors,” says Ben Costello, Director of Fun at Mountain Whitewater.

A MWD Guest Donates a Shoe

Shoes left behind by rafting guests or dropped off in collection bins will be donated to One World Running. Anyone can donate! Donate lightly used shoes at any location with One World Running collection bins, such as Mountain Whitewater. Other local stores include Boulder Running Company, SolePepper Sports, Bolder Boulder, and many others around the country. For more information on One World Running or Mountain Whitewater visit www.oneworldrunning.com or www.raftMWD.com.
